Celebrate two cultures in one event--a festival full of song, dance, and art!
On Sunday August 24th from 2pm to 7pm in Union Square plaza in Somerville there will be a Haitian and Brazilian Festival.
Haiti and Brazil hit the ‘Ville is a celebration of Somerville’s diverse population. Traditional foods such as Haitian Fritay and Brazillian Churrasco will be available for sale, Haitian poetry and drumming by city of Cambridge poet laureate Jean Danny Joachim, Music by Samba de tres, and a huge musical surprise at the end!
Haiti and Brazil have many connection social and political connections notably the love of carnival and soccer. In 1978 Pele’s visit to Haiti marked the beginning of Haitian’s love of Brazillian soccer and Brazillian singer Caetano’s song Haiti é Aqui shows Haiti’s significance Haiti’s history to some Brazillians. Somerville’s immigrant population constitutes of Haitians and Brazillians who are being served under the SomerViva program.
