Policy

Somerville Cultural Trust

The City of Somerville is inviting residents, artists, cultural organizations, and creative businesses to help shape what could become the first Municipal Cultural Trust in Massachusetts, a new tool designed to protect affordable creative space and prevent artist displacement

Cultural Capacity

Capacity-building helps develop the skills, abilities, and processes of Somerville's creative individuals, organizations, and institutions to grow the city’s network and support of arts and culture offerings, resources, and services.

Zoning

We helped usher in the region's first Arts Overlay district with our 2009 zoning work in Union Square.  Developing zoning policy to support art spaces and artists has been central to our work for years.

Opportunities

Local Cultural Council Grants

The Local Cultural Council (LCC) Grant Program is funded by the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC) and the City of Somerville. Somerville LCC program grants are reviewed by SAC board members and local peers with expertise in the appropriate disciplines. Each year new panelists are convened to review new submissions.  Grants are available for projects in the community, individual fellowships, and support to schools for art projects or cultural field trips.

The Council prides itself on creative placemaking from public art projects to gallery spaces to our ubiquitous switchbox project. Somerville is home to a wealth of creative work found in our streets, parks, and homes.
