Creative Music and Improvisation

Michael Sachs (clarinet & vocals, NYC) and Aaron Darrell (bass & vocals, SVILLE) met in Boston around 2009. They formed a band with drummer Jun Young Song called MATADOR, which held down a monthly residency in Cambridge for a year and half, and published their debut recording on BIRN records, BIRN's first release as well. Since then they have both been active touring musicians, parading around the country sharing their unique style of composition and improvisation. After Jun left for Korea, Aaron & Michael formed the duo "Cover Letter" composed of music written by both members. It is at once beautiful and frightening, and loaded with sparkling personality.

It's going to start as just me, with a guitar and an amp that's got all kinds of beats and with which I can sample/loop myself and then play with myself. I'll probably sing too.
I'm putting together a supergroup - looking for another guitarist, bassist, drummer, possibly keyboardist and a female vocalist (who of course may play one or more of the preceding instruments).
Understand I don't expect this crowd on my porch Saturday; it will be just me and if folks want to jam that's fine.

The Variable Density Sound Orchestra: Minimal Density version for Porchfest, featuring the best world renowned improvising musicians: Guitarist Garrison Fewell, trumpeter Jerry Sabatini, saxophonist Jason Robinson and drummer Luther Gray! As the name implies, the VDSO is an actively changing and growing collective of jazz improviser/composers from Boston, Somerville and the world. The VDSO conducts improvisational dialogues that transcend stylistic boundaries in creative music. We believe in social justice and bringing attention to the role of collective improvisation and creative arts to illuminate the culture of today's society.

Guitarists Garrison Fewell and Eric Hofbauer play creative music, most of which is improvised, with references to such diverse elements as Congolese and Egyptian mythology, Delta blues, Astro-Physics, a muezzin's call to prayer and the sonorities of traditional instruments such as the kora and African thumb piano. The duo also adds original compositions to the mix, as well reinterpretations of music by Sun Ra, Thelonious Monk and John Tchicai.
