From the darkness there is a dream, featured works by Alicia Thomas
Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow --
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.
-excerpt from A Dream Within A Dream by Edgar Allan Poe
As the days get shorter and a chill fills the air, the darkness comes that much closer to us. Emerging artist, Alicia Thomas, invokes that mantra, fusing elements of the macabre with Victorian elegance. In fact, you might find her work very “apro-Poe” for this time of year.
A newly licensed tattoo artist working out of The Boston Tattoo Company in Somerville, MA, Alicia Thomas is a printmaker by school and trade and trying to find the perfect balance of being a tattooist and being a printmaker. For the time being, she strives to make every tattoo better than her last.
She considers herself extremely lucky--surrounded by amazing artists and she finds herself learning something new. Every day is a challenge in self-discovery--constantly creating, learning, and always working on becoming a more well-rounded visual artist.
Alicia graduated from The Art Institute of Boston in 2011 majoring in Fine Arts with a focus in printmaking. During the course of her education she spent eight months studying abroad in Paris, France concentrating on Intaglio printmaking and oil painting. Since graduation she has completed internships at Shepherd Print Studio studying under Liz Shepherd, and MixIt Print Studio. She centralizes her printmaking around relief (woodblock), intaglio (etching), and silkscreen and is always exploring new ways to incorporate different techniques into her work.
