History & Mission

Since 1979, the Painting School has become a place where enthusiasm and creativity blossom. For some people, the Painting School is a hobby, a way to relax, a chance to grow; for others it is a renewed memory of something they liked to do as a child and a chance to explore their creativity. For some, it is the workspace they don’t have at home. For some, a foothold to develop an art career.

All you need is a little time every week and a desire to create something special for yourself, your home or for someone else. You’ll meet new people and work out your creative ideas amidst both challenge and support. Believing that commitment is the backbone of fulfillment, the school also promotes motivation and discipline and planning. The results are full of magic, self-discovery and talent.

If you’d like to join us - don’t be shy, just sign right up and feel welcome. Before long, you’ll feel right at home.

- Katherine Martin Widmer, 1990

About the School

To kick off Spring, the Somerville Arts Council and the Inside-Out Gallery present the KMW School of Painting Student Showcase, featuring students from both the adult and youth classes. Located at 40 Quincy St in Somerville, KMW School of Painting is an inclusive community that celebrates the joy of creativity for all.

For four decades, Katherine Martin Widmer taught students to embrace the transformative powers of art, community, and individual expression through the medium of paint. In Katherine’s absence, the school exists to share this mantra with current and future students.
Today, her legacy continues to empower a creative community by providing access to low-cost instruction in the visual arts to students of all ages and abilities, and by welcoming and celebrating all students as artists. The school’s mission focuses on inclusive, differentiated instruction that allows each student to develop and expand their skills for creative expression.
