“Color expresses something in itself. One can’t do without it; one must make use of it. What looks beautiful, really beautiful – is also right.” – Vincent Van Gogh
About the Artist
Succumbing to the serendipity of the stroke allows for the unexpected to happen. It gives permission to let the unpredictability of your muse lead the way. For Nick Carlisle: color, chaos, and flow have been his credo to bring his vibrant creations to life.
Growing up in Bangor, Maine, he found drawing at an early age but took a brief hiatus college. It was here that his passion reignited. Carlisle received his Master’s in Visual Arts Media at Emerson College and a newfound mantra to bring both joy and colorful flow to his daily life.
As an artist, he values process and experimentation over the end-result. Like a jazz musician inspired by the chaos of improv, he lets spontaneity be the guide. Dauntless, with his approach to color, his bold palette of hues leaps off the canvas, transforming everyday landscapes and pet portraits into a delightful kaleidoscope of color.
Why pets? Whether it is simple irresistible tilt of their head when they want to get our attention or the way their fur reflects light like a prism in the sunlight, they bring magic to the sameness of our daily lives. Carlisle states, ‘While they do not have the physical capacity to smile or laugh, they have a unique ability to impart so much emotion. There’s so much joy, so much happy serenity in our furry friends; so much silliness, so much innocent curiosity and of course our pets’ loyal companionship.’
Nick Carlisle lives and works in Somerville, MA and has been at Vernon Street Studios since 2011. He is a freelance artist and is available for custom portraits of your fuzzy friends.
