Launched in 2008, Intercambio is a vibrant Language and Culture Exchange Program that offers a welcoming space to practice language skills with native speakers, build meaningful connections, and share stories with people from around the world.
The program runs in the Fall and Winter, with sessions held on Wednesday evenings for 8 consecutive weeks. Whether you’re looking to improve your fluency or simply share your own language and cultural background, Intercambio is the perfect place to learn in a friendly, supportive environment.
Want to join next time? Contact Jessica Saavedra at [email protected] to be among the first to know when application opens. We’d love to welcome you into the Intercambio community!
What Participants Say
“Whether we’re learning about folk traditions or contemporary music, sharing stories about our hometowns, or welcoming guest visits from community leaders, Intercambio gives us space to practice our language skills while truly getting to know our neighbors. For me, Intercambio is a way to strengthen my bilingual communication, learn openly, and become a more engaged and connected member of the community.”
— Maya
“I really enjoyed being part of the Intercambio community. It’s a safe and welcoming space to talk and meet kind people. For me, it has been a valuable experience that supports my adaptation process and has helped me feel increasingly connected to this city (mi barrio).”
— Carlos
“At Intercambio, I found a warm and welcoming space to practice my Spanish while making new friends in the Somerville community. There is an energy of nonjudgmental, playful enjoyment, and every member brings their own unique experiences and open-minded attitudes to each meeting. I learned about different regional dialects of Spanish, enjoyed connecting with people from different backgrounds than my own, and felt connected to this city in a way I hadn’t before. Thank you, Intercambio!”
— Hunter
“My experience with Intercambio has been about learning and, most importantly, feeling a true sense of belonging in a community that genuinely cares about understanding different perspectives. As an immigrant, there are moments when you deeply miss the place you come from and the people who understand your experiences. Through Intercambio, I found a space where connection feels real and meaningful. The conversations, shared curiosity, and empathy helped me strengthen my English, learn about issues that shape our lives, and feel more confident, connected, and empowered to participate in the community around me.”
