This is your opportunity to be part of a unique cultural exchange where you’ll practice language skills, build connections, and share stories with people from all over the world.
Intercambio is the perfect space to improve your fluency or share your language and culture in a welcoming, supportive environment. You’ll meet once a week (8 Mondays) from 6:30 to 8:00pm alongside a diverse group of participants, all eager to learn and engage.

Why Join Intercambio?
Intercambio is more than just language practice, it’s about creating connections and experiencing cultures firsthand. Each session is designed to give participants equal time practicing one language and switching to another, so everyone becomes both a student and a teacher. You’ll enjoy engaging conversations, learn from native speakers, and celebrate the diversity of global cultures.
The program runs for 8 weeks, concluding with a fun and delicious Global Food Potluck where participants share dishes representing their cultures—a perfect way to wrap up our journey together! In past sessions, we’ve welcomed participants from Colombia, Peru, Mexico, El Salvador, India, China, Brazil, Haiti, Guatemala, the United States, and beyond.
Plus, we offer one optional cultural activity, such as a field trip, museum visit, food tour, or public art walking tour, to further enrich the experience.
Intercambio is more than just a program, it’s a community! Many participants stay connected and go on to join other Somerville Arts & Culture (SAC) programs, from Nibble cooking classes to ArtBeat, and some even serve on the SAC board. It’s a place where friendships and connections extend well beyond the sessions.
Who Can Join?
Intercambio focuses primarily on English and Spanish language exchange. Because it is a conversation-based program rather than a beginner language class, participants should have at least an intermediate conversational level in the language they would like to practice. You don’t need to speak perfectly! We simply ask that you feel comfortable participating in conversations and activities and are open to learning, sharing, and connecting with others.
Speak or want to practice another language? Let us know in your application! Our community is multilingual, and when possible, we’ll do our best to connect participants with others who share their language interests.

Intercambio is an application-based program, and space is limited. After the application deadline, we carefully review all submissions to create balanced language pairings and a supportive, inclusive group experience. Submitting an application does not guarantee placement, but all applicants will be thoughtfully considered and notified of the final decision.

Intercambio Application – Fall 2026
Welcome to the Intercambio Language and Culture Exchange Program – Fall 2026! Participants will meet once a week on Monday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00 PM, starting September 28, 2026. Each session is designed to spend half the time speaking one language and the other half speaking another, making every participant both a student and a teacher.
