DESCRIPTION: February 2011 Scott Cahaly\n\n\n\nAmidst the gray of winter\,

Gallery feature the vibrant work of Scott Cahaly\, bringing a lively spiri
t to the heart of David Square.\nArtist Statement Scott Cahaly\nhttp://www

ve of the world around me! I choose to portray this world through the medi
ums of paint and stone. I enter the creative process only having some smal
l idea of an issue I want to address. It could be something I saw on the n
ews\, a political issue\, something about my yoga practice or even my bike
. At the inception of each piece a few broad strokes or chisel marks are m
ade then the work informs me of what it wants to be. At this point the wor

process has grown into something that resembles its own world\, filled wit
h heart energy\, visuals and mystical sensations. I do my best to remember
what has yielded inspiring results in the past and what is needed to keep
the process and finished result fresh and inspiring In my work I seek to
depict inner and outer realms\, the metaphysical\, the transcendent\, and
a sense of timelessness and mystery. In both the painting and the sculptur
e I use repetition of stylized depictions of the face and the human form.
At times these are easily recognized\, and at others they are abstracted a
lmost past the point of recognition. These pictorial elements comprise my
primary visual vocabulary which I use in dynamic\, swirling\, and fluid ov
erall compositions. In the paintings I use brilliant color on dark grounds
\, resulting in a radiant feel not unlike stained glass. Through my work I
aim to reinforce for the viewer the validity of his or her own spiritual
journey. My artistic practice feeds my spiritual progress and I hope it he
lps contribute to that of others. My art is a reflection of me and an all
pervading vision I have of the world around me! I choose to portray this w
orld through the mediums of paint and stone. I enter the creative process

SUMMARY:Raysa Mederos
DESCRIPTION:October 2011 Artist Raysa Mederos \n\nIn honor of Hispanic
Hertitage Month\, The Inside OUT gallery presents October artist Raysa Med
eros. Her work consists of a palette inspired by her native country Cuba\,
using bold colors and outlining them with thick black lines to highlight t
heir brightness. The bright colors through each piece evoke the vibrant li
ght of Havana\, where she grew up. The black lines are reminiscent of the
ironwork in the windows and balconies of the colonial buildings in Old Hav
ana. She paints to return to the memories of her childhood and the endless
hours spent watching her father paint and mix colors. As a child\, Raysa
was fascinated by the magic of his paintbrush. In contrast\,as an adult\,
it is the peace and joy that painting brings. Each finished piece is an ho
mage to her father and to the majestic beauty of the city of her childhood
 .\nArtist info \nhttp://raysamederospainting.webs.com/\nAbout Hispanic Her
titage Month Each year\, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Mont
h from September 15to October 15\, by celebrating the histories\, cultures
and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain\,
Mexico\, the Caribbean and Central and South America. The observation star
ted in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and w
as expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period st
arting on September 15 and ending on October 15.\nIt was enacted into law
on August 17\, 1988\, on the approval of Public Law 100-402. The day of Se
ptember 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence fo
r Latin American countries Costa Rica\, El Salvador\, Guatemala\, Honduras
and Nicaragua. In addition\, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independenc
e days on September 16 and September18\, respectively. Also\, Columbus Day
or Día de la Raza\, which is October 12\, falls within this 30 day perio
 d.\n

SUMMARY:Chicha Night
DESCRIPTION:&nbsp\;\nAnother ArtsUnion food and music event--this&nbsp\;tim
e we'll explore&nbsp\;Peru.\n\nJoin us as we dive in for a feast of Peruvi
an cuisine and culture at Machu Picchu! For just $25\, attendees will rece
ive an appetizer\, an entree\, and a pisco sour&mdash\;the quintessential
Peruvian cocktail. Restaurant owner Rosy Cerna tell us about the history a
nd cultural signifcance of the various dishes and DJ and mixologist Brothe
r Cleve will offer us all a pisco primer and spin Peruvian surf beats musi
c all night long! &nbsp\;\n\nThe culinary lineup offers something for carn
ivores and vegetarians. For appetizers\, guests will choose from ceviche o
r causa lime&ntilde\;a (chicken or vegetable)\, which translates to &ldquo
\;sustenance of life\,&rdquo\; a dish from Rosy&rsquo\;s home town of Lima
 . For entr&eacute\;es\, chose from aj&iacute\; de gallina &ndash\; a tasty
chicken dish with a sunny hue that comes from the spicy aj&iacute\; amari
 llo chile pepper\, one of the key ingredients of Peruvian cuisine &ndash\;
or quinoa stew (chicken or vegetable). Wash it all down with a pisco sour
\, made with pisco\, a pure brandy first concoted in the 16th century &mda
sh\; now made by a new generation of craft distillers. Spirits authority B
rother Cleve will explain the long\, fascinating journey of pisco&rsquo\;s
500 year history\, as well as how it&rsquo\;s made and how best to enjoy
it!\n\nJust back from Lima\, Peru\, Cleve recently trawled Lima flea marke
ts\, to find the best Chicha beats. Chicha is a style of music first popul
arized in the 1960&rsquo\;s\, when it came down from the Andes mountains t
o meet the Pacific ocean. Chicha is a variation of Colombian Cumbia\, util
izing &ldquo\;surf music&rdquo\; styled electric guitars and synthesizers
in place of the traditional instruments used in neighboring countries. Ori
ginally the favored music of the working classes\, chicha&rsquo\;s popular
ity had grown over the decades in Peru and world wide.\nThanks&nbsp\;to Ma
cchu Pisco LLC for their support of&nbsp\;this event.\n&nbsp\;\nNo tixs re
quired but be there on time @ 7 pm\; $25/person.\n

SUMMARY:Project MUM
DESCRIPTION:Project MUM returns in its full glory.\n\nBack in 2006 a year a
fter we started ArtsUnion a former board member Susan Berstler proposed th
 e idea of holding a dance party under the McGrath. (Susan&nbsp\;was&nbsp\;
and&nbsp\;still is obsessed with hidden dark spaces that she&nbsp\;explore
 d in Berlin.)&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; So Susan\, lighting guru Todd Sargent\,
and the Arts Council went through the crazy permitting and production pro
cess and produced Project MUM.&nbsp\;&nbsp\;It was a huge hit and transfor
med a space folks typically want to forget.\nAfter a short hiatus\, this f
all\, members of SCUL Somerville's long-term friendly chopper bicycle nerd
gang\, will be collaborating with local artists and performers to present
you the 2012 edition of this well-loved outdoor dance party: Meet Under M
cGrath.&nbsp\; Check out the co-producers site for calls for support and m
 ore info.\nRain or shine\; suggested donation $10.

SUMMARY:Food of the Americas with Ryan Redmond
DESCRIPTION:This &quot\;Foods of the Americas&quot\; cooking class highligh
ts a number of those pre-Colombus American ingredients.\nOne of the things
that really interests me\, as a chef\, is the history of food. I&#39\;m n
ot particularly interested in authenticity as it relates to cuisine\, but
I am curious to know where foods come from and the story of how they trave
l and change. The Columbian Exchange - the global transfer of crops\, anim
als\, people\, ideas\, and diseases that came about after the voyages of C
hristopher Columbus in the 1490s - stands as a major episode of food histo
ry. Many foods now found in many corners of the world - potatoes\, tomatoe
 s\, chiles\, corn\, squash\, peanuts\, chocolate and much more - have thei
r origins in the Americas. We&#39\;ll prepare a roasted winter squash soup
garnished with hazelnuts and parsley\; blue corn flatbread\; seared cod g
lazed with a maple syrup-mustard sauce topped with a carrot\, dried cranbe
rry\, pecan salad\; and a roasted winter squash\, wild rice salad.

SUMMARY:March 2013 Salon: The Intersection of Bikes and Art
DESCRIPTION:What do you get when bicycles and art cross paths?\n\nSkunk\, A
gainst the Grind\, and Bikeyface will lead us on a wheeling adventure that
  intersects comics\, robots\, road culture\, documentary filmmaking\, lase
 rs\, blogging\, choppers and more.\nAbout the Speakers\nSCUL-ture and Scul
pture\nSkunk speaks of SCUL: bicycle chopper gang\, and Skunkadelia: art m
ade from upcycled bike parts. Skunk has been transmogrifying trash-picked
bikes since 1996. The awe-inspiring chopper Cloudbuster will be on hand fo
r show and tell.\nAgainst The Grind\nRachel Wiederhoeft and Jessica Barnth
ouse Against The Grind will discuss documentary filmmaking while living on
bikes. How do you find a film subject in the middle of nowhere? How much
film production equipment can you reasonably bring on a bike tour? When do
you film and when do you just let the experiences happen? Questions like
these will be covered\; along with clips from our documentary series they
produced while pedaling 3\,500 miles across the United States.\nBikeyface
\nBikeyface is a hilarious\, and sometimes irreverent\, web comic about bi
king in the city. Bekka Wright will talk about how she uses her cartoons t
o entertain\, educate\, and raise the profile of biking for normal transpo
 rtation.\n&nbsp\;

SUMMARY:April 2013 Salon: Intellexploitation: gender\, race\, and body ima
 ge in post-exploitation microbudget filmmaking
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\nJoin Mark Phinney (writer/director of FAT)\, Paul M. McAl
arney (writer/director of Honky Holocaust)\, and Michael J. Epstein (salon
curator and co-writer/director of TEN)\, three first-time feature filmmak
ers\, each currently in a late stage of film production\, discuss the comp
lexity of tackling sociopolitical messages without regard for mainstream\,
  film-industry expectations in a post-exploitation world.\n\nIt is perhaps
with great irony that exploitation films\, known for their &quot\;disrepu
table&quot\; content\, were also virtually the only films that gave margin
alized and undervalued populations (including social/racial minorities and
women) sympathetic platforms for serving as primary protagonists in place
  of stereotype-dependent roles.\n\nFilmmakers used unrelenting violence\,
explicit sexual content\, and unabashed societal taboo in place of big bud
gets to attract curious audiences and present grittier\, realistic depicti
ons of the darker parts of our society. In recent years\, a wave of big-bu
dget filmmakers have brought these once shadowy works into urbane\, mainst
ream acceptance. Where does that leave artists operating on a smaller fina
ncial scale? Are there still voices that remain unheard?\n\n&nbsp\;\n
