The SomArt Gallery and CreatSpace at the Armory was created by the Somerville Arts Council in direct response to feedback from BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) artists and community members seeking safe, affordable, and accessible creative space. Launched during the COVID-19 era alongside a $267,000 BIPOC grant initiative, this program offers free exhibition and multipurpose space for artists of color to lead, curate, and connect their work. Located on the second floor of the Armory, the space features a rotating gallery and two rooms for workshops, rehearsals, and community gatherings. With over 50 artists supported to date, the initiative centers equity, leadership, and sustainability—ensuring Somerville’s cultural landscape reflects the diversity and creativity of all its people.
