Fighting For Our Planet by Stan Eichner

The Somervile Arts Council and the Inside-Out gallery are pleased to feature photography by local artist and Sierra Club member, Stan Eichner-- an exhibit that illustrates the dynamic relationship between landscape photography and climate activism. Beginning on July 27th, the exhibit, entitled “Fighting for Our Planet” promotes an appreciation for the profound beauty of the world and underscores the critical importance of protecting our planet from thoughtless destruction – especially the current climate crisis. These images of the world’s natural beauty underscores why each of us must fight harder than ever to protect our planet. At the same time, images of climate activists illustrate one of the key ways to raise people’s consciousness and spark their activism.

Stan Eichner is a retired civil rights attorney committed to using his photography to further support environmental activism. His work will be on display at the Inside Out Gallery (CVS display window), One Davis Square in Somerville, MA from July 27 through August 31.

The Inside Out Gallery is a project of the Somerville Arts Council.

Fighting For Our Planet
Artist Statement

This exhibit at the Inside-Out Gallery illustrates the dynamic relationship between landscape photography and climate activism. For the last 10 plus years, I have grown as a landscape photographer. My images promote an appreciation for the profound beauty of the world and underscore the critical importance of protecting our planet from thoughtless destruction – especially the current climate crisis.

More recently, I have combined my passion for photography with climate activism. I provided my photos to Sustaining All Life-United to End Racism [SAL-UER] to be used in advocacy flyers at the Climate Change Conference in San Francisco 2018.  In the fall of 2019, I led a team of photographers to document the work of SAL-UER’s delegation at the UN Climate Summit in NYC.  I have supported Sunrise Movement Boston by photographing their work, including their banner drops over Storrow Drive and off of the Mass. Ave. Bridge. I have also photographed the Boston Climate Strike march in December.

These images of the world’s natural beauty remind us of why each of us must fight harder than ever to protect our planet. At the same time, images of climate activists illustrate one of the key ways to raise people’s consciousness and spark their activism.
About the Artist:

I’ve more seriously focused on photography since 2012 when I first exhibited in Somerville Open Studios. My work has been shown in juried shows in Boston, Somerville and Roslindale. My image was chosen for the cover of the 2020 East Somerville Main Streets calendar and several other images within the calendar. My black and white images appear regularly in the Present Time journal.  I was the featured artist in the January 2020 It’s All About Arts online journal. As a retired civil rights attorney, I’m exploring ways of using my art to further support environmental activism. This exhibit is dedicated to that pursuit.
