All Day — ‘Different Spokes’ Bike Exhibit (big traffic island)
Enthusiasm for biking and art converge in this gallery of unique and artistic bikes. Don’t miss Bill Turville’s Fish Bike or the bike created by children in the Arts Council’s Art in a Garden program. Festival goers can vote on their favorite bike!
All Day — Bike Valet (Dover Street)
Leave your bike in a safe, contained Active Living Zone with Shape Up Somerville. Browse ArtBeat without walking your bike around. Leave your seat, helmet, light and bike — risk free. Located at Dover Street, at the heart of the festival.
All Day — Bike and Helmet Decorating Center
Decorate your bike or helmet wit the Somerville Arts Council! Give your bike some love and personality with paper, ribbons, recycled materials, bells and whistles! Or help decorate the bike canoe!
All Day — Bicycle Riding School Informational Table
Feeling like a bike pansy? Want to jump back on after a 20 year bike break? Sign up to learn how and bring biking into your everyday life.
All Day — Green Activity Area
Activities include Somerville Climate Action’s scavenger hunt and Groundworks Somerville’s Food Miles Game. Or children can participate in Redbone’s art card table and Somerville Recreation Center’s ‘design your own container’ craft. There will also be performances by Tufts Traveling Trunk (1pm & 3pm).
All Day — City of Somerville Goes Green!
Somerville is the first city to make the Smart Car its official vehicle. At the festival one of the city’s four new Smart Cars will be on display, along with one of the city’s new Prius vehicles. The city will also have a looping video of its new TV show “Going Green,” which includes tips on how to save the envioronment without spending a lot of money. Also on hand, folks from 311 and Resi-stat.
5:15 PM — Green Brigade Parade!
Join the parade on foot or on wheels. Show off your newly decorted bike or display the green-themed creation you made at Groundworks Somerville’s activity table. Parade stages at the big Davis Sq traffic island at 5:15. Join us!
All Day — Green Architecture Display
Come learn about sustainable housing from local leading experts in green design! Learn about the WGBH building’s green roof installation with Apex Green Roofs; check out Paul Lukez Architecture’s reconstructions of “dead malls” and Green Goat’s architectural salvage business.
All Day — 100 Craft Vendors! (along Holland and Elm Streets)
The streets of Davis Square will be transformed into a mecca of hand-crafted wares with our largest ever assortment of artists and artisans. Returning ArtBeat icons such as BrooksMorris (Buckaroo’s Mercantile), Raelinda Woad (Storyteller Jewelry), and Don Sawyer (Fine Art & Dine Art) will be joined by a slew of debuting craftsters, including Carrie Kan henna body art and Skeintiy Clad’s handpainted and handspun yarn.
