Dance in the Somerville Theater

ArtBeat: Sat., July 19th

1:00pm — Beat Tree
Beat Tree is a collaboration between choreographers, dancers and artists committed to exploring all forms of dance, rhythm, poetry, and performance art while staying true to African roots. Their presentations, incorporated with live drumming and spoken poetry, will include a thematic choreo-poem whose theme is centered on “finding place”, “KouKou” a traditional West African piece and “Djorolen” which focuses on the birth/rebirth cycle of life. The pieces presented will be a fusion of traditional West African dance with contemporary elements.

2:00pm — Weber Dance
Weber Dance — where mind, metaphor and movement intersect — is a contemporary dance company exploring the vast expapnse of human expression revealed through the extraordinary nuance of the body in motion. At ArtBeat they will be performing “Vestige,” a piece written by Andrew Arnett surrounding memory and reflexion.

3:00pm — Ka Hui Hula Kamawila

Ka Hui Hula Kamawila (Somerville Hula) presents Na mele o ka‘aina (The Songs of the Land)—a performance of traditional and contemporary hula. Calling on rich dance traditions of the Hawaiian people, this performance explores a connection to the natural environment through story-dances featuring Hawaiian places, plants, flowers, animals, weather phenomena, and folk heroes. The show is family-friendly, since most of the kolohe lyrics are in Hawaiian.

4:00pm — Zoe Dance
Founded in 2002, Zoé Dance has presented works by Callie Chapman Korn, Ivan Korn, Emily Beattie and Meghan Ballog. Zoé Dance continues to perform in publicly accessible venues in order to make the art of dance an approachable art form for all and to heighten the awareness of dance in the Boston area and beyond.
