More Activities throughout the Square

ArtBeat: Sat., July 15th

All Day — "Pure Junk" Visual Art Exhibit (Davis Sq. traffic island)
A one-day outdoor exhibit located on a traffic island in the heart of the festival, "Pure Junk" features artists and sculptors who exemplify how discarded objects can be recast in fresh, ingenious ways. Pieces include: busts made of old shoe soles by Danielle Krcmar; a junk totem pole by Wayne Viens; and a giant robot made from discarded bicycle parts by Skunk. During the month of July, "Pure Junk" works will also hang in the windows of McIntyre & Moore Booksellers (255 Elm Street), including Daniel Maher's stained glass window, which incorporates old candy jar lids.

1:00PM/All Day — McIntyre & Moore Booksellers Literary Events and Exhibit (255 Elm St.)
From 1pm to 2:30pm, Somerville Writers will present recent works in this year's "WordPlay" literary event. In keeping with this year's ArtBeat "reCycle/reNew" theme, readings will reference and recast famous literary works. Throughout the day, Somerville writers will display published and unpublished works at a table outside of the bookstore; copies of books will be available for sale at the store.

All Day — Over 60 Craft Vendors! (along Holland and Elm Streets)

There will be numerous craftsters, artists and artisans selling their wares throughout the festival. From blown glass and photography to fiber arts and jewelry, there promises to be plenty of creative objets d'art to peruse--including funky items like lampshades made out of drink umbrellas and jewelry made out of old tape measures.

All Day — Children's Art Activities in Statue Park (by Store 24)
There will be numerous artistic activities for children, including paper mache, altered book making, and tie-dye paper flower making. There will also be activities relating to this year's "reCycle/reNew" theme, including "Recycled Somerville," where festival-goers of all ages will create a model of Somerville from materials rescued from garbage cans and recycling bins throughout the city.

1:00 & 3:00pm — Tufts Traveling Treasure Trunk in Statue Park (by Store 24)

Founded in 1987, this troupe is a student-run, community service group that tours around the greater Boston area and raises money for charities. Trunk writes its own plays, directs its own shows, and makes its own costumes. Trunk will perform two whimsical pieces for children, at 1pm and 3pm, in Statue Park.

All Day — Subversive Choppers Urban League (Elm Street)
SCUL fashion bizarre, one-of-a-kind bicycles by recycling old bike parts and other found material. SCUL will display athleticism, absurdity and artistry that promises to amuse and astound.
