I wanted to create a piece with physical depth as well as narrative depth; illustration work is so often viewed digitally, and my goal was to build something that could be photographed truthfully, but is enhanced by in-person viewing. I hope that the evolution of this phone box from an empty shell to a little pocket of rich color makes someone happy in an unexpected moment. “A Neighborhood Barbecue” is meant to celebrate the strong community that Somerville has given me and which this city makes so rewarding to build. --- Lia Marcoux
